New Year’s Day 2026 and 2027
Liechtenstein celebrates New Year’s Day with a public holiday every 1 January, as does most of the rest of the world. However, the celebrations really begin on New Year’s Eve and reach a high point with the turning of the clock from 11:59pm on 31 December to midnight on 1 January.

New Year’s Day is a time of resolutions and starting fresh for some, while for others it is spent recovering from a big, late night spent with friends and family.
Liechtenstein may be a small country, but it celebrates New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day in a big way. Most people stay up all night partying on 31 December. They also go door to door in groups to greet friends, relatives, and neighbours this time of year.
Kids love New Year’s in Liechtenstein because it is the day of the year when they visit their godparents to receive gifts from them.
In the tiny village of Triesenberg, the one who wakes up the earliest on 1 January is given special honour, while the one who sleeps in the latest is labeled “the lazy one”. There are actually contests to gain this honour and avoid that shame!
